Happy New year - RX480

So after a few months of existence the RX480 has become an established GPU for many users. It is powerful enough for most games and works well for an HTPC setup.

We have had many driver updates and as the product matures we have seen many fixes.

One of the annoying problem has been the problem of playing H.264 content. Many different codecs support (or try to) this scenario. Using the LAV filter (v0.69.0) using DXVA2 does not work, the picture keeps breaking up. However H.265 UHD 4K decoding using hardware acceleration works fine.  4K contents has to cope with 4 times the data conversion of H.264 and is probably more complex using HEVC. What is not too clear is where the problem lies.  As yet neither AMD or LAV developers have owned this issue !!
Initially AMD drivers mentioned the problem but that mention has been dropped as if it is not a driver problem.

For me personally this is not an issue as H.264 software decoding works and does not require any DXVA2 help.

We will see what 2017 brings to this arena.
Happy New year everyone.

Setting an HTPC on Windows 10

Windows 10 can provide sound via many different connections. Most Motherboards will have a set of RCA connections. The RCA connections are not normally available on a laptop.

Also there is SPDIF via Coax or Optical

Sound channels are also available via HDMI and Display Port

Not sure why AMD have dropped H.264 corruption from its known problems....are they not telling us something.

From your comments nikospot I seem to be in the same situation as you are. I too use DVB (DVBviewer in my case). As you said there are many codecs out there some work and some don't. Is this then a codec issue or a hardware issue...maybe it is a driver issue. All I know is that HEVC decoding using LAV filter works fine for me. If the HEVC decoding works (which is probably more complex than H.264) are we really sure this is an AMD problem. Question: before Crimson drivers did anyone have H.264 hw acceleration working using LAV filter using any other AMD GPU? Don't get me wrong I would love to see LAV working with H.264 as well and the fact that AMD do not pass any real clues is downright inconsiderate to all their customers.
Following this blog I have an open mind as to what may be the issue. It would be ideal if we could get comments from the LAV filter creators (maybe they can shed some light as to what can be done to fix this). MADVR is another codec with its own set of problem. Microsoft codecs ?

Not sure why AMD have dropped H.264 corruption from its known problems....are they not telling us something.

I have an 4K LG Monitor which supports HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Colour.  I use the monitor with Windows 10 (Using RX480 8G as a GPU). I also have a ROKU4. I connect both devices using HDMI via a SONY DN860 AV amp. My problem is this. When I watch UHD content via the ROKU 4 it will only work if  HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Colour is turned on which is fine. What that does on the windows 10 display is limit the pixel format to YCbCr 4:2:0 which leaves me with a not so good picture. When I turn off  HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Colour windows lets me use YCbCr 4:4:4 and RGB 4:4:4 (Full RGB). I suspect this is an issue for AMD but any feedback appreciated. By the way when I switch from HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Colour OFF to ON Windows10 detects the change and limits my display to only this pixel format YCbCr 4:2:0
Not too sure how to make the ROKU4 work without HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Colour as that also would give a working solution.

Does anyone know why these Multiple HDMI Playback devices are created?
Is there anyway to remove them ? I think every time I install a driver it creates a new entry but cannot swear to it.

H.264 content may experience blocky corruption when streaming using P2P content players on some Radeon RX 400 series graphics products.
So at last h.264 get problem s a mention.
Not sure why Matroska is being quoted here. My problem can be created while streaming directly from terrestial or satellite diretly to player (DVBviewer). Also I don't use an MKV container for storage but .ts

Screen blanks out

I have been noticing a problem whhich has started to happen recently. I noticed it with 16.9.1 drivers and also after I installed 16.9.2
What happens is that the screen picture disappears for a few milliseconds. It is not possible to time this but it is quite short, less than a second I think.
The problems once it starts to happens continues to happen periodically, no constant time. Sometimes you get two instances in a minute but then not for 15 minutes so it is quite random.
I do use the browsers quite a bit both IE and Firefox.
I was wondering if anyone else has this problem?

I am not a gamer so my GPU does not get trashed.
Typical GPU stats

I have also set the fan to target to 70C

Any BBC transmission at 1080i fails when DXVA enabled.

H.264 interlaced content cannot be handled by AMD drivers correctly when turning on DXVA.

Re: RX480 DXVA H.264 not working.
Frank Vella Decahertz
A reponse from DVBviewer forum:
====================================
I think AMD and Nvidia have different issues.
AMD => interlaced H.264 with new RX 4x0 cards and / or new drivers
Nvidia (and Others) => stream errors with "bad" error handling
====================================
seems to indicate the problem is interlaced content.
From my tests
Astra Demo 2160p works fine
BBC HD 1080i does not work.
I don't have 2160i content so cannot verify.
Let me find some 1080pcontent and test. OK an iphone 1080p recording plays fine.
So DVB tech person is correct in his analyses.
My iphone 5s records in 1080p
iphone recoding 2180p works fine too.

So H.264 interlaced content cannot be handled by AMD drivers correctly when turning on DXVA.

We've reproduced what we think is the same issue DXVA and H264 corruption

response from AMD

We've reproduced what we think is the same issue as you guys are reporting. I'm using Ace Stream and H264 based content is exhibiting the same type of block corruption you guys see.

We are investigating the issue and will report back as soon as I have more information for you guys.

Thanks for being patient and also for trying to narrow this down on your end. Much appreciated!

UHD and bitrates ?

If it was the bitrate surely UHD which uses higher bitrates works fine.
Just tested with iphone created videos, they all play fine with DXVA enabled for HD.
Here is one example.
DXVA RX480 1691hotfix for AMD Staff v2 - YouTube

if you check this video out UHD working fine with 24mbit/sec bitrate.
RADEON RX480 demo using DVBviewer 4k video - YouTube

Hey, just letting you know AMD is in the process of looking at your reported issue. We are in the process of trying to reproduce the issue locally. It isn't as black and white an issue as it seems. We extensively test H264/H265 decoding during validation so please be assured we didn't ignore a problem from the get go. Anyway! Hopefully I can reproduce this issue, if not I'll try to follow up with you here.

As AMD are looking into just be patient I suggest.
By the way H264 decoding is really not a big deal. Any midrange CPU can cope with that , in fact my Phenom 1100T CPU which is about 7 years old copes with decoding that using about 5% of CPU....H265 works fine....so it is not a big deal.

By the way the answer to the DVBviewer query is yes the recorded video playback also corrupts the image when DXVA is turned on for h264.

After installing the 16.9.1 driver the Crimson GUI does not load.
This is causing me grief as I cannot adjust any settings, in particular the fan and the GPU is getting quite warm for no reason. As you can see the GPU is getting close to 80C and I am not doing anything intensive on my PC, the fan should be running much faster to cool it down.

More woe....a report that UHD playback is now not working with 16.9.1 driver.

well it seems for me on the latest drive i cant play any 4k stuff at all now, hardware decoding is totally dead on this card now, no idea why nobody with the 460's is picking up on this, the 460 is the supposed to the next gen HTPC card, perhaps everyone sacked these off and went for the GTX 960 or the 1060

 Another user commented

I can only test some online sample 4k UHD viedos.
It seems still working on my RX460 with LAV and 16.9.1.

But if I use madvr+dxva, it will not work. No videos , only a black window. This is the same as 16.8.3 though.
